Finnish Community
& Culture
At the heart of our community is connection. Whether it’s a morning walk, a shared meal, or a game of cards with friends, life here is filled with small moments that make each day meaningful. Community and culture at Suomi-Koti are rooted in tradition and connected by heart. At the core of our community is sisu — the quiet strength, resilience, and warmth that Finns are known for. Whether you were born in Finland, have Finnish ancestry, or simply feel a connection to the culture, you're welcome here at Suomi-Koti.
We celebrate and preserve the richness of Finnish life through language, food, music, and shared experiences. From sauna to song, coffee to crafts, our community brings together generations to honour where we come from and explore where we’re going.
We believe that well-being comes from being seen, heard, and valued — and our community life is shaped with that in mind. Everyone contributes something special, and everyone belongs.
Whether you join us for a cup of coffee and pulla (Finnish coffee bread), a game of Mölkky, a special musical performance, one of our fundraising events, Finnish language class, or just good company, there’s a place for you here.
What makes Finnish culture special?
Language & Heritage: Many of us speak Finnish or have family who do. We support each other in learning and sharing the language.
Traditions & Cultural Celebrations: From Juhannus (Midsummer) to Pikkujoulu (Little Christmas), we gather in ways both festive and familiar.
Wellness & Simplicity: We value nature, rest, and balanced living — whether that’s a quiet walk in one of our many nearby parks, our front or back garden, working out through our Seniors Active Living Centre (SALC) or a visit to the sauna, hot tub and/or pool.
Shared meals with familiar Finnish favourites and nourishing daily options
Care & Community: We look out for one another. Our community spirit is built on mutual support, humour, and a deep respect for dignity and independence.
