Suomi-Koti has been a warm and welcoming home for Finnish and Estonian seniors in Toronto for almost forty years. As a charitable organization, Suomi-Koti relies on the generosity of individuals, families, and community partners to continue offering the high-quality care, cultural connection, and community spirit that make our beautiful seniors’ residence unique.
Suomi-Koti is a registered charity that needs your support. Eldercare in Ontario has long struggled with inadequate government support, and the growing number of aging Canadians is set to make this shortfall even more pressing in the years ahead. Aging comes with its challenges, and for Finnish seniors, these challenges can be amplified by language barriers, cultural isolation, and the need for specialized care that respects their traditions. Donor support helps make a difference.
Your support helps us:
Enhance programs and activities that bring joy and connection to our seniors
Maintain and improve our facilities
Invest in special projects and equipment and our future building
Support culturally sensitive care and language services
Keep Suomi-Koti feeling like home—for today and for future generations
Whether you choose to make a donation, volunteer your time,
or spread the word, your support makes a difference.
Impacts of Supporting Suomi-Koti
Many Finnish seniors have spent their lives building strong communities, businesses and families, and now it is our turn to give back by ensuring they receive the comfort, dignity, and care they deserve. The consequences of Suomi-Koti not receiving adequate support would be that our seniors will be forced to seek housing and LTC in non-Finnish, "generic" facilities which would result in their loss of connection with their cherished Finnish roots.
Our mission is to provide a home where Finnish seniors can thrive, surrounded by familiar language, customs, and traditions.
We offer:
High-quality, personalized senior care services
Finnish-speaking staff and culturally relevant programming
Nutritious, traditional Finnish meals
Social and recreational activities that celebrate Finnish culture
A warm, inclusive community that combats loneliness and isolation
With your generous contributions, we can:
Expand and enhance our facilities to accommodate more residents
Hire additional Finnish-speaking caregivers and healthcare professionals
Improve accessibility and safety at Suomi-Koti
Continue to develop engaging cultural and wellness programs
Provide assistance to seniors in need
Donor support makes the difference at Suomi-Koti. Our building was built through the generosity of donors and volunteers who had a vision and saw it through to completion, resulting in this warm and welcoming residence for the Finnish and local community. In addition, the long term care home, our Senior Active Living Centre (SALC) and local neighbourhood and city connection spaces bring people together in Leaside. Since the beginning, donors have supported Suomi-Koti.
Suomi-Koti is the natural place to provide second and third generation Canadian Finns with education about all things Finnish to help them deepen their sense of connection with their heritage, their birthright. In time with increased donor support, Suomi-Koti will be better able to facilitate additional programming (lectures, workshops, classes on Finnish history, culture, traditions, cooking, language). This would also provide an opportunity for the seniors at Suomi-Koti to interact more with younger generations. Research consistently shows that intergenerational relationships, where seniors and young people interact, offer significant benefits to both age groups. These relationships can improve mental and physical health, reduce ageism and social isolation, and foster a sense of purpose and community.
